Posted on: July 22nd, 2008 Review: VH-1 Rock Honors - The Who

VH-1 honored The Who at the latest incarnation of Rock Honors. This show makes as much sense as MTV’s VMAs, considering both channels have forsaken music for lame ass reality shows. The basic idea behind this garbage is to have some contemporary bands who are Who fans play a few songs, while a couple of douchebag actor’s introduce the acts, and then The Who performs.

While Foo Fighters captured the fierceness of The Who with their set and the Flaming Lips set personified The Who’s theatricality, but let’s be real, the only reason to show up to this party was Pearl Jam. Paying tribute to Quadrophenia, PJ ripped throw Love Reign o’er Me and The Real Me. They proved yet again why they are the heir apparent to The Who and why they are the greatest rock band out today.

Tenacious D, did a remarkable unfunny song-bit and Adam Sandler introduced the who with a parody song of his own, which was hysterical. Some other lowlights of the show were Incubus’s set, looking like a poor man’s Red Hot Chili Peppers and sounding like a rotten chili Pepper, these guys weren’t fit to hold Roger Daltry’s jock.

Now for Sean Penn. Does anyone give a shit what this pompous asshole has to say? Not Rockheap that’s for sure. But Sean’s comment about The Who were way off mark. Yeah, i know he didn’t write them. So I’m venting more at the morons who wrote this nonsense. Sean’s comments were, that The Who never sold out and they maintained their integrity. Oh how wrong you are. First off The Who are the biggest sell out’s in the history of rock n’ roll. It’s about money and has been for many years and they admit it. So rockheap has no problem with this, just don’t portray them as these fiercely outside the system rockers who have integrity. After all they only have 3 of their biggest songs as theme songs for each of the CSI shows and their songs have sold cars, allergy medication and financial instuitions. You couldn’t be more establishment then The Who if you tried.

Oh yeah speaking of The Who, they performed a set at the show and to be honest with you, they sounded like crap. I mean Pete is still one of the greatest guitarists ever, His voice is a little weary, but he can hold a note. Roger on the other hand sounds like he’s singing with sandpaper caught in his throat, just awful.

Now these guys are in their 60’s after all, but so are Mick and Keith and they still got it. So i find it a little irresponsible to go on tour charge people lots of money if you have no voice left, maybe he was sick that night, but I don’t he was, I think this is all Roger has left. So if you plan on seeing The Who this fall, remember Rockheap won’t get fooled again and neither should you.
